Newburgh Back Pack Program Highlights Community Partnerships
On Thursday, May 3rd at 9:15am Deacon Jack Seymour Food Pantry (301 Ann Street, Newburgh) held an event that highlighted their weekly program which feeds students in need who struggle with food insecurity.
The focus of the event was to underscore the partnership between Stop and Shop Foundation and Orange County (as funders), St Francis of Assisi Parish (as “boots on the ground” implementers, picking up, packing and delivering the bags), Newburgh Enlarged School District (providing referrals and distribution of bags to students), and the Food Bank of the Hudson Valley (providing the food and program oversight). Together, this group of people have created Food Bank of the Hudson Valley’s largest BackPack program.
On hand to back bags and honor this program were Ms. Andrea Moriarty, Registrar for NECSD and Mr. Bill Morgan, Homeless Liaison for NECSD and weekly volunteer for the program.
Each week, dozens of retired teachers, most of whom worked in the Newburgh Enlarged City School District for decades, volunteer for this important program. This event, packed 550 bags that included loaves of bread, cereal, rice, tuna fish, vegetables, and several other food items. The menu varies week to week depending on donations.
Regular volunteers and retired teachers from NECSD include: Bill Morgan, Homeless Liaison for NECSD, Ms. Ann Volmer, retired from NFA North, Ms. Lorie Hunter, retired from NFA North, Mrs. Linda Zalinowski, and Mr. Paul Zalinowski, Coach George Bowles, Mrs. Grace Bowles, Mr. Eachus, retired from NFA Main and former Orange County Legisaltor, Mr. Peter Turron, retired from NFA North, Ms. Pat Steele, retired from Vails Gate and NFA North, Ms. Sue Connor, retired from Gidney Avenue Memorial School
