NFA Student Playwright Recognized by NYS
Each year, NYSTEA holds a Student Playwriting Competition to assist budding playwrights in the development of their work. A playwright is someone who writes scripts for theatrical performances that will be performed on stage. Play submissions are open to all theater students in NY state grades 10-12, should be approximately five minutes in length and are collected February through April. The NYSTEA Student Playwriting Competition committee reviews and scores every entry based on the rubric.
Every year each school is invited to send one student to audition to perform in the final playwright shows. Students have about 10 hours to learn and perform these shows. Last year Abbie was Newburgh's selected student to audition for the show and made it. Abbie was so inspired that she decided to submit her own playwright for this upcoming NYSTEA year; her play was accepted as one of the five finalists whose playwrights will be performed at NYSTEA this year.
Following her NYSTEA play acceptance Abbie was the playwright for this years 24-hour play that was recently presented as part of the Newburgh Fringe Festival through Safe Harbors. With aspirations of becoming a professional writer after High school, Abbie hopes to build on these valuable experiences as she pursues her future goals, using each opportunity to strengthen her writing skills, expand her portfolio, and take the next steps towards a successful career in writing.
This achievement was made possible with the help of our dedicated teachers, Ms. Kristina Morano (Band Director/ Winter Drama Director) and Ms. Mandy Clifford (Dance Teacher / Musical Production Director).
