Rolling With Math: The Great Board Game Project!
The math classroom of Ms. Liza Coopersmith recently transformed into a board game design studio! Students took on the roles of game developers to turn core math concepts into exciting, playable board games. This project challenges them to combine critical thinking, artistic design, and teamwork as they brought their mathematical creations to life.
Our young entrepreneurs practiced modern project management by using a shared Google Slides presentation to brainstorm, draft their notes, and map out their ideas simultaneously. Students were charged with designing a colorful, neat, and engaging game board with a clear path from start to finish. Teams chose one major topic to center their gameplay around: Fractions, Decimals, or Percents.
Every game needed a fun title and a cohesive theme, whether it was sports, an under-the-sea adventure, a trip to Disney, or a musical journey; the theme guided the entire design. Students selected or created game tokens that fit their theme and used everything from dice and pennies to rocks and custom paper pieces. To further hone their math skills, each game required at least 15 unique game cards, each featuring a different math problem for players to solve to advance. Students then had to present their game to their classmates. Last, but not least, the students got to play their games!
