South Middle School's Annual Books and Breakfast Event!
The sun had barely cleared the horizon on a recent Saturday morning, but the halls of South Middle School were already buzzing with an energy that could rival a stadium concert. Our annual Books & Breakfast isn't just an event; it’s a celebration of community, and this year’s chapter was truly one for the record books. This annual event has been going on for more than a decade and gets better and better every year!
The heart of the morning started in the kitchen. Our dedicated teachers were up before dawn, orchestrating a massive spread of breakfast favorites. The smell of golden pancakes, bacon, and fresh coffee wafted through the corridors, drawing in families by the hundreds.
The real magic, however, was in the service. Our South Middle School students and SMS alumni stepped up as the ultimate hosts, donning aprons and smiles to serve their families, neighbors, and teachers. Seeing our students take pride in their hospitality reminded us all that leadership starts with a helping hand (and a perfectly flipped pancake).
As guests settled in, the air filled with the enchanting voices of the NFA Madrigals, three of whom are proud SMS alums! Their performance provided the perfect soundtrack for a morning of exploration.
The cafeteria and gymnasium were transformed into a vibrant marketplace of ideas. Families navigated through dozens of community resource booths, connecting with local organizations that keep our neighborhood strong. Between stops, the "flash" of the photo booth captured memories of friends for attendees to bring with them, as copies were printed and distributed on site.
The competition got heated during our high-stakes "Are You Smarter Than a Middle Schooler?" quiz show. Let’s just say some parents might need to brush up on their pre-algebra and world geography—our students definitely showed off their academic edge!
For those looking for a more hands-on experience, the morning offered:
- Art Projects: A kaleidoscope of creativity where students and younger siblings crafted together.
- Author Signing: A rare chance to meet a professional writer and get that favorite book personalized.
- Teens' Book Nook: A curated selection of the latest YA hits that kept our older students browsing for hours.
- Hands-on Activities: Interactive stations that proved learning is anything but boring.
- Fire Truck Exploration: The City of Newburgh Fire Department opened their truck for students to explore!
From the youngest toddlers scribbling at the art tables to the grandparents laughing at the quiz show, today was proof that South Middle School is more than just a building—it’s a hub of connection.
A massive South Middle School THANK YOU to our staff, our student servers, the local authors, and every community partner who made this morning possible. We’re already counting down the days until next year!
