Heritage Middle School Scholars remind one another to always “Choose Kindness”
Mr. Olsen's and Mrs. Victor’s Literacy Block class reminded one another whenever they are faced with a choice, “Choosing Kindness” is always the way to go.
Scholars had the chance to watch the movie Wonder. After watching the movie, the class identified all the acts of kindness they saw in the film. Mr. Olsen made sure to remind the students that being “nice” and being “kind” are not the same thing. Niceness is only surface level. Choosing to be kind requires more; it demands more thoughtfulness; there needs to be action. Kindness leads to change and is impactful. Mr. Olsen and the students were also in agreement that one who is truly kind does not expect anything in return. The class spoke in depth that action with expectation of reciprocity is NOT kindness; it is manipulation.
The class then talked at length about how the biggest acts of kindness can actually be the smallest of choices. Mr. Olsen, Mr. Victor, and the class had conversations about how true kindness becomes what you choose to do when nobody is around to witness it. At the conclusion of their lengthy conversations, they were reminded of some of the character Mr. Browne’s words in the movie: “When given the choice between being right and being kind. Choose kind”
The students were then given the chance to let us know examples in their own lives of how they themselves choose kindness. They were reminded that no act of kindness is ever too small.
From Students:
Markiyah H. said, “I enjoyed this activity because sharing and kindness can go a long way. I choose kindness when I help a homeless person because even if they don’t have the ability at that time to share kindness; I still do it because I know they are going through a hard time.”
Ashley M. said, “I liked what we did in class because I found it to be a very positive project. I choose kindness when I cheer up my friends on their bad days. I am kind to them on their bad days because it makes me feel like a better person knowing I was able to make their day better.”
Levi R said, “I liked the part where I got to mention that I always help people that need kindness. The activity made me feel better about myself.”
Juliana H. said, “I choose kindness when I always use my manners and show respect. It was a nice activity because I was able to show how I use kindness in life like Augie did.”
