Students and Community Members Commemorate 30th Anniversary of Million Man March
Black History is American History. History isn’t just something we find in textbooks; it is a living, breathing narrative that we shape every single day. As we reflect on our shared past, we must remember that Black history is American history. The struggles, the triumphs, and the pursuit of justice by Black Americans are the very threads that weave the fabric of our nation’s identity.
In that spirit of remembrance and action, the Newburgh community celebrates black history throughout the year. This fall students and community members gathered to honor the 30th anniversary of the Million Man March, beginning at the Colored Burial Ground and walking in unity down Broadway to stand at City Hall. It was an event dedicated to unity, atonement, and a renewed commitment to the place we call home.
A Call to Unity in Newburgh
The event brought together a diverse crowd of students, elders, and community leaders. While the original march in D.C. was a historic milestone, our local gathering proved that the message of collective responsibility is just as vital today.
The energy in the air was one of purpose. Participants didn't just come to look back at 1995; they came to look forward at what Newburgh can become when we stand shoulder-to-shoulder.
Voices of the Future: MBK Student Fellows
The highlight of the day was undoubtedly the presence of our My Brother’s Keeper (MBK) Student Fellows. These young men took to the forefront not just as students, but as leaders, delivering powerful messages that resonated across generations.
Their theme was clear: Active Participation. The fellows spoke passionately about the importance of:
-
Owning our Narrative: Defining our community by its strengths and potential rather than its challenges.
-
Civic Engagement: Understanding that making a difference starts with showing up—whether in the classroom, at a city council meeting, or at a community cleanup.
-
Mentorship: Reminding us that we are all "our brother's keeper," and that progress is faster when we lift others as we climb.
Working Together for a Better Newburgh
The anniversary was a beautiful reminder that when we bridge the gap between our students and our community members, we create an unstoppable force for good. The work doesn't end when the banners are packed away; it begins when we take those inspirational messages back to our neighborhoods.
Thank you to everyone who showed up, spoke up, and stepped up. Let’s keep that momentum going.
