South Middle School Scientists Determine - Will it Sink or Will it Float?

South Middle School students conducted an experiment in which they added 15-gram increments of salt to 400 mL of water. Their goal was to determine whether they could make an egg float by adding salt to the water.

Students learned the difference in vocabulary comparing the meaning of weight, volume, mass, and density. Density is the ratio between an object's mass and volume. The students added salt to the water to increase the liquid's density. They wanted to see if the increased density would be enough for the egg to float. As they added more salt, they observed how the egg floated at different levels in the water as they added more mass. 

This experiment allowed the students to explore how changes in mass and volume affect density. They learned that by altering the density of a liquid, they can impact the buoyancy of an object. It was an exciting way for the students to apply their understanding of density and discover how it can be used to identify and compare matter.
