Mask Update for All NECSD Buildings - February 28, 2022

Dear Newburgh Enlarged City School District community, 

On Friday, February 25, the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) released updated mask guidelines. The CDC introduced “COVID-19 Community Levels,” a new tool to help communities decide what prevention steps to take based on the latest data. 

According to the CDC, “Community Levels can be low, medium, or high and are determined by looking at hospital beds being used, hospital admissions, and the total number of new COVID-19 cases in an area.” The tool indicates that Orange County is currently considered LOW level.

Masking in all NECSD school facilities, for all individuals, will be optional beginning Wednesday, March 2, 2022. 

This decision is based on:

• The revised recommendations from the CDC, 
• Authorization from Governor Hochul, and 
• The removal of policy 8132 by the NECSD Board of Education at the February 28, 2022 Special Meeting. 

Those who wish to continue masking will be allowed to do so, but no scholar or employee will be required to wear a mask/face covering in a school/district building at this time. You do not need to notify the school of your choice. We will not be asking any scholar or staff member their preference on mask-wearing. 

Parents and guardians are asked to speak with your child(ren) regarding this personal decision and the importance of respecting the personal decisions of others. The focus of school remains the educational well-being of all students, so mutual respect of each person's choice to wear or not wear a mask will be honored in our school community.

We expect additional details from the State about the lifting of the mandate and how it will impact other protocols, such as quarantine, to come in the next several days. We will continue to keep you updated of any additional changes to COVID-19 protocols.

We must continue to use caution by monitoring for symptoms and staying home from school if sick. If a student or staff member tests positive for COVID-19, they should notify their school immediately. Additionally, we ask our community to continue to use other mitigating factors like regular hand washing and/or use of hand sanitizer.

I would like to thank the entire NECSD Community for your endurance and patience during these unprecedented times. As we take steps toward normalcy, we remain committed to providing a healthy and safe working environment for our scholars, staff and community.

Estimada comunidad del Distrito Escolar de la Ciudad Extendido de Newburgh,

El viernes 25 de febrero, el Centro para el Control y la Prevención de Enfermedades (CDC, por sus siglas en inglés) publicó pautas actualizadas sobre mascarillas. El CDC presentó "COVID-19 Community Levels", una nueva herramienta para ayudar a las comunidades a decidir qué pasos de prevención tomar en función de los datos más recientes.

Según los CDC, "los niveles comunitarios pueden ser bajos, medios o altos y se determinan al observar las camas de hospital que se utilizan, las admisiones al hospital y la cantidad total de nuevos casos de COVID-19 en un área". La herramienta indica que el Condado de Orange actualmente se considera de nivel BAJO.

El uso de máscaras en todas las instalaciones escolares de NECSD, para todas las personas, será opcional a partir del miércoles 2 de marzo de 2022. 

Esta decisión se basa en:

• Las recomendaciones revisadas de los CDC,
  Autorización del Gobernador Hochul, y
  La eliminación de la política 8132 por parte de la Junta de Educación de NECSD en la reunión especial del 28 de febrero de 2022.

Aquellos que deseen continuar con el uso de cubrebocas podrán hacerlo, pero ningún estudiante o miembro del personal deberá usar un cubrebocas/cubierta facial en una escuela/edificio del distrito en este momento. No necesita notificar a la escuela de su elección. No le preguntaremos a ningún académico o miembro del personal su preferencia sobre el uso de máscaras.

Se les pide a los padres y tutores que hablen con sus hijos sobre esta decisión personal y la importancia de respetar las decisiones personales de los demás. El enfoque de la escuela sigue siendo el bienestar educativo de todos los estudiantes, por lo que en nuestra comunidad escolar se honrará el respeto mutuo de la elección de cada persona de usar o no una máscara.

Esperamos detalles adicionales del Estado sobre el levantamiento del mandato y cómo afectará a otros protocolos, como la cuarentena, en los próximos días. Continuaremos manteniéndolo informado sobre cualquier cambio adicional en los protocolos COVID-19.

Debemos seguir teniendo precaución al monitorear los síntomas y quedarnos en casa y no ir a la escuela si estamos enfermos. Si un estudiante o miembro del personal da positivo por COVID-19, debe notificar a su escuela de inmediato. Además, le pedimos a nuestra comunidad que continúe usando otros factores mitigantes, como lavarse las manos regularmente y/o usar desinfectante para manos.

Me gustaría agradecer a toda la comunidad NECSD por su resistencia y paciencia durante estos tiempos sin precedentes. A medida que avanzamos hacia la normalidad, seguimos comprometidos a brindar un entorno de trabajo saludable y seguro para nuestros estudiantes, el personal y la comunidad.
