GAMS Students Create their Own Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade
Students at Gidney Avenue Memorial School (GAMS) spent time earning about the history and traditions of the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, exploring how iconic floats and giant balloons are designed, constructed, and brought to life. Inspired by what they learned, they created their own storybook-themed floats and character balloons, combining artistry, engineering, and literacy. Each student selected a favorite character, planned a design, and wrote a brief explanation describing why their float or balloon deserved a special place in the parade.
Their creativity culminated in a delightful hallway “reverse parade,” where younger students walked through a display of the finished floats and balloons. As they toured the parade route, they traveled through beloved storybook characters. The event celebrated student voice, collaboration, and joy, bringing to life the magic of the Macy’s parade within the school community.
