Students Learn Vital Life Skills During Fire Prevention Week
This week is Fire Prevention Week and schools throughout the district will be visited by Fire Departments to provide vital, age-appropriate fire safety education to students. These interactive sessions aim to teach children not to fear firefighters but to view them as community helpers, while also instilling essential life-saving knowledge. During a visit, students typically get to tour the fire engine and fire truck, learning about the different tools and equipment, and seeing a firefighter put on their full protective gear, which helps them understand a firefighter's appearance and sound during an actual emergency. Students are reminded to leave a structure immediately in the event of a fire and to call 911.
Students were asked if they have a planned meeting spot in the event of a fire and to identify one if they don't have one or have recently moved.
hey also learn never to play with matches or lighters, and what to do—crawl low under smoke and never hide from a rescuer—if a fire occurs. Students also learn practical fire prevention and emergency response skills, such as the importance of checking smoke and carbon monoxide detectors, creating and practicing a home escape plan with a designated outside meeting place, and the proper procedure for a "Stop, Drop, and Roll" maneuver if their clothing catches fire.
These photos were taken at Vails Gate STEAM Academy during their visit from the Vails Gate Volunteer Fire Department. Our very own Director of Safety and Security, Mr. Steve Sager is a volunteer with this department. He drove and operated the truck and escorted a few staff members who soared to new heights in the bucket!
