Recently, Meadow Hill Global Explorations School students in Newburgh celebrated National Heart Health Month in a special way, by honoring former classmate Johnny Sileno, who passed away from cancer in 2010.

On Wednesday, February 6, 2013, two Newburgh Free Academy athletes signed letters of intent with two prestigious institutions. Newburgh Free Academy linebacker Michael Cerisano signed a letter of intent to attend Division II Southern Connecticut State.

NECSD RECOGNIZES ATTAINMENT OF '13-'15 SCHOOL DISTRICT MANAGEMENT EFFICIENCY GRANT
On Friday, January 18, 2013, the District held a recognition ceremony in appreciation of the contributions and support towards the district’s attainment of the '13-'15 School District Management Efficiency Grant from the NYS Education Department.

This winter season, thirty NFA students, along with several NFA teachers and staff members, volunteered their time and traveled to Community Church of the Nazarene in Queens, NY, to help those left devastated by Hurricane Sandy.

SOUTH MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENTS PAINT HOLIDAY SCENES ON SHOPRITE WINDOWS
Recently, District students from South Middle School, along with art teachers Noelle Brand and Fran Catania, painted holiday scenes in the windows of ShopRite on North Plank Road on a cold December Saturday morning.


NFA MARATHON PROJECT KEEPS STUDENTS ON THE RIGHT TRACK
Earlier this year, the Newburgh Free Academy Marathon Project participated in a half marathon in Hartford, Connecticut. NFA is now in its fourth year with the project and the group meets several times a week to practice.


NEWBURGH FREE ACADEMY STUDENTS PARTICIPATE IN NETWORK SCIENCE RESEARCH
Students from Newburgh Free Academy, led by science teachers, Judy Cooper and Veronica Dunham, are participating in innovative research on network science as part of a collaborative partnership with the West Point Network Science Center.


TEACHERS OBTAIN EQUIPMENT THROUGH FUEL UP TO PLAY 60 GRANT
Meadow Hill School Physical Education teachers Scott Seabury, Kristen Gunsch, Danielle Desarro and Elissa Kenney, along with School Nurse Teacher Denise Ribble, received bags of fitness and sports equipment. Ribble helped the teachers obtain the equipment using funding from the school’s Fuel Up To Play 60 grant.

NFA STUDENTS TAKE PART IN ANNUAL EMMA’S STOCKINGS HOLIDAY DRIVE
On Monday, December 17, 2012, Newburgh Free Academy students and teachers visited Elant at Meadow Hill Nursing Home and Rehabilitation Center and Safe Homes of Orange County, to deliver holiday gifts and cheer.


NECSD ENERGY INITIATIVE RECOGNIZED FOR EXCEPTIONAL ENERGY CONSERVATION
At the District's BOE meeting held on November 27, 2012, Energy Conservation Administrator Roger Ramjug provided an update of the Energy Education program’s success. His presentation provided results that since July of 2009, the NECSD has reduced their energy consumption by twenty-two percent.


JOHN FARRELL AT HORIZONS ON THE HUDSON
On Monday, December 17, 2012, singer, songwriter, author, and peace educator John Farrell treated Horizons on the Hudson Pre-K students to a special winter musical celebration.

On Tuesday, December 11, 2012, students from the 8th grade Performing Arts House, at South Middle School, traveled to Purchase College to watch the Chamber Theatre Production Company perform five classic short stories live. This was the culminating activity in a five week short story unit completed by the students.

SUPER STORM SANDY HITS THE HEARTS OF FOSTERTOWN STUDENTS
Fostertown ETC Magnet School students in Newburgh opened their hearts and their kitchen cabinets to show support for the New York and New Jersey families that were affected by Super Storm Sandy.

New Windsor School held its annual Math & Science Night on November 8. Over 200 students, family members, and friends enjoyed a fun-filled evening of math and science hands-on activities.

The Pre-K classes at Horizons on the Hudson in Newburgh celebrated Thanksgiving by feasting on a bountiful lunch to showcase the history of Thanksgiving.

NFA BLOOD DRIVE - THURSDAY DECEMBER 13TH
Newburgh Free Academy will be holding a blood drive on Thursday, December 13, 2012 from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. in the Girls’ Gym. Due to Hurricane Sandy, the region’s blood supply is very low and it is critical that the supply be replenished. Each donation saves three lives. Donors should eat a healthy breakfast prior to donating.

GARDNERTOWN STUDENTS REFLECT ON HURRICANE SANDY EXPERIENCE
Recently, first grade students at Gardnertown Fundamental Magnet School in Newburgh utilized their English Language Arts skills and wrote essays about Hurricane Sandy. Under the direction of their teachers, the students wrote detailed accounts of their experiences when Hurricane Sandy hit the Hudson Valley.

ROMEO AND JULIET AT NFA - FRIDAY AND SATURDAY
The NFA Dance Department will present an all-dance production of Romeo and Juliet on Fri. December 7th at 7PM & Sat. December 8th at 2PM in the NFA Main Campus Auditorium. Over 170 students are involved in the production that is directed & choreographed by NFA Dance teacher, Mandy Clifford. As a reminder to Staff/Faculty, October and November are Open Enrollment months for health insurance changes. You may switch your health insurance carrier, make changes to your current health insurance coverage and add dependents up to the age of 26 onto your health insurance plan. All changes will be effective January 1, 2013.

NYU PROFESSOR VISITS NECSD TEACHERS AND STAFF FOR LECTURE ON EDUCATION SYSTEM
Recently, teachers from the Newburgh Enlarged City School District gathered at Newburgh Free Academy for a Superintendent’s Conference Day professional development speaking engagement with Dr. Pedro Antonio Noguera. Dr. Noguera is the Peter L. Agnew Professor of Education at New York University.

TEMPLE HILL ACADEMY STUDENTS SCORE A TOUCHDOWN WITH FUEL UP TO PLAY 60
Temple Hill Academy in New Windsor had a special visitor for breakfast on Wednesday, September 19, 2012. The students in the classrooms of Barbara Lisi, Jaime MacArthur and Fran Weller were visited by former New York Giants running back Joe Morris.


DISTRICT INCREASES NUMBER OF TEACHERS QUALIFIED TO TEACH ADVANCED STEM COURSES
Teachers from the District participated in a five-day STEM Summer Institute over the summer, part of a new initiative providing advanced course work professional development training for teachers in the STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) disciplines throughout New York state.


ORANGE COUNTY VETERANS MEMORIAL DAY SCHEDULED FOR SATURDAY SEPTEMBER 29TH
On Saturday, September 29, 2012, the community is invited to honor our veterans by increasing awareness of September 29, 1918, the day 39 men from Orange County died in the battle of the Hindenburg Line. The event is sponsored by the County of Orange, the Purple Heart Hall of Honor, Inc., and the Newburgh Armory Unity Center.

Newburgh Enlarged City School District officials, along with members of various NECSD committees, came together on Thurs., August 30, 2012 for the Annual Summer Construction Bus Tour.


ESYP COMPONENT HELD AT BALMVILLE MEDIA AND COMMUNICATIONS CENTER
The Newburgh Enlarged City School District Extended School Year Program component held at Balmville Media and Communications Center recently concluded after a six-week period. Students focused on reading, math, and socialization skills in addition to other special areas of study.


STUDENTS VISIT SUNY ALBANY FOR STEM SUMMER ENRICHMENT PROGRAM

AFLAC’S NEW FLEX FORMS FOR 2012-2013 SCHOOL YEAR
The new Flex Plan year begins on October 1st, 2012. The District’s new Flex Plan carrier will be Aflac. Those who were participants in the Flex Plan under the Preferred Group will still have until December 31, 2012 to submit Flex claims incurred prior to September 30, 2012, directly to the Preferred Group.

SENATOR LARKIN RECOGNIZES ENGLISH TEACHER FOR FULBRIGHT AWARD DISTINCTION
On Friday, July 27, 2012, NYS Senator William J. Larkin Jr. visited the NFA Main Campus to honor NFA English Teacher Christine McCartney, recipient of the distinguished Fulbright Awards in Teaching grant. McCartney is one of approximately twenty teachers from across the US who recently earned this distinction.

Christine McCartney, an English Language Arts teacher at NFA and Teacher Consultant for the Hudson Valley Writing Project has been awarded a Distinguished Fulbright Awards in Teaching grant to conduct research in Finland, the US Department of State and the J. William Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board announced recently.


VAILS GATE SCHOOL STUDENTS EXPLORE THE MOHONK PRESERVE
Third grade classes from Vails Gate High Tech Magnet School went to Mohonk Preserve in New Paltz, New York recently thanks to a combination of grants. Teacher Janet De Stefano wrote and was awarded a $700 Target Educational Grant as well as a $650 grant she received from Teaching the Hudson Valley.

Recently, third grade students at Vails Gate High Tech Magnet School in New Windsor participated in their fourth annual Spelling Bee. After a preliminary spell-off, the top five students from all third grade classes were eligible to take part.

Recently, students from Temple Hill Academy created a mural to coincide with the school's new track and field as part of Fuel Up to Paint 30. The outdoor mural was designed under the direction of Temple Hill Art Teacher Liza Mills and developed in conjunction with Temple Hill's partnership with the Fuel Up to Play 60 initiative.

Recently, the Temple Hill Academy Compact Committee unveiled the newly established Family Center located on the first floor of Temple Hill Academy. The Family Center allows parents and family members to connect with school faculty, other THA families and community members.


MEMBERS OF THE VARSITY BOYS' TENNIS TEAM QUALIFIED FOR NYS TENNIS TOURNAMENT
Three members of the Varsity Boys' Tennis Team qualified for the NYS Tennis Tournament which was held at the Billy Jean King USTA Tennis Center in Flushing, Queens. Junior Dennis S., #1 singles player on the team, qualified for the singles draw while seventh graders Tyler R. and Jarrett M. qualified for doubles.

NFA senior Gaelen McCartney describes himself as an artist since birth. “Ever since I can remember, my favorite past time has been creating. Whether it may be finding new paints, building an outdoor sculpture, or arranging an assortment of found materials, I was inspired to create as much as I could,” he explained.

The Friends of the Newburgh Free Library will hold their annual Book Sale on Sun., June 10 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission to the Book Sale is free. Prices are $1.00 for hardcovers and $.50 for paperbacks; children's and specialty books as well as tote bags will also be sold. The specialty books are individually priced.

NFA JUNIOR ROTC CADETS HELP BEAUTIFY NEWBURGH'S DOWNING PARK
Recently, Newburgh Free Academy Junior ROTC students participated in a community service initiative at Downing Park in Newburgh. The twenty-five year long tradition, to help keep the park clean, involves cadets participating in one cleanup event in the fall and one in the spring.

NFA SOLAR RACING TEAM NAMES 2012 SOLAR PROTOTYPE CHAMPION OF THE AMERICAS
The Newburgh Enlarged City School District is proud to announce that the Newburgh Free Academy Solar Racing Team participated in the 2012 Shell EcoMarathon in Houston, Texas from Thursday, March 29, until Sunday, April 1, 2012, resulting in the NFA Solar Racing Team becoming the 2012 Solar Prototype Champion of the Americas.

LOCAL GUITAR PRODIGY MYLES MANCUSO SHARES HIS LOVE OF MUSIC WITH GAMS STUDENTS
Students at GAMS Tech Magnet School in Newburgh were treated to a special performance by 16-year-old musician Myles Mancuso before spring break recently. Mancuso, a student at Arlington High School, has garnered praise from some of the biggest names in the music industry.


TEMPLE HILL STUDENTS AIM TO ‘KICK BUTTS'
Recently, Temple Hill Academy students in New Windsor participated in the National Kick Butts Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids. In collaboration with the Temple Hill School nurse teachers, Steven Homan's Honors Earth Science class created a tri-board display to educate their fellow students on, "They put WHAT in a cigarette?!".

NFA'S EMPTY BOWLS RAISES MONEY FOR THE FOOD BANK OF THE HUDSON VALLEY
On Thursday, March 29, 2012, Newburgh Free Academy students and staff raised approximately $3,400 during Empty Bowls, an annual event held to benefit the Food Bank of the Hudson Valley. Empty Bowls is a national network of volunteer efforts to provide hunger relief.


HORIZONS ON THE HUDSON STORYTELLING TROUPE VISITS HEAD START
The Horizons on the Hudson Storytelling Troupe received a warm reception at Head Start of Eastern Orange County recently when students visited the building to share their love of Kamishibai storytelling.

On May 1, 2012, Health Insurance Buy-Out forms will be available in the main office of each building. Recently, South Middle School students and their teachers visited Albany, NY, for a special trip to the State Capital. During their trip, students met with New York State Senator William J. Larkin Jr. (R, C) of the 39th Senate District.

UNUSED SNOW DAYS ADDED TO MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND
The District's unused snowdays have been added to the Memorial Day Weekend. District schools and offices will now be closed on Thursday, May 24th through Tuesday, May 29th. Schools and offices will reopen on Wednesday May 30th.

REGISTRATION BEGINS APRIL 24TH FOR 2012-2013 UNIVERSAL PRE-K PROGRAM
The District will hold the 2012-2013 Universal Pre-K registration period beginning on Tuesday, April 24 until Friday, May 4, 2012. Children must be four years old by December 1, 2012 in order to be eligible for Pre-Kindergarten. All children must be toilet-trained prior to entry. Children need not be present to register.

SMS FUEL UP TO PLAY 60 STUDENTS VISIT WITH THE NEW YORK GIANTS
On Tuesday, March 27, 2012, seven students from SMS's Fuel Up to Play 60 program, along with SMS Family Nurse Practitioner and FUTP 60 Advisor Nancy Faust, Director of Food Services Andy Calvano and BOE President Dawn Fucheck, attended a special youth summit held at the New York Giants' MetLife Stadium.


NFA COSMETOLOGY STUDENTS BRING THE ‘HAIR' TO SPRING MUSICAL HAIRSPRAY
Students in Newburgh Free Academy's Cosmetology program, a facet of the Career and Technical Education Department, put their skills learned in the classroom to use recently by fitting wigs, creating 50's hairstyles and applying make-up for the cast members.

Students at Heritage Middle School in New Windsor recently participated in the 6th Annual Saturnelli Science Fair on Saturday, March 24, 2012. The annual event was renamed last year in memory of former Newburgh Enlarged City School District Superintendent of Schools.


FOSTERTOWN ETC MAGNET SCHOOL HOLDS FUEL UP TO PLAY 60 FOOD TASTING
Recently, Fostertown ETC Magnet School students and staff kicked off the start of the school's Healthy Snacking program, as well as the continuation of the Walk Across America Challenge. The program is part of the Fuel Up to Play 60 school health initiative.

STAFF/FACULTY: MARCH 31, 2012 DEADLINE TO ENROLL IN TIER 5 MEMBERSHIP
Tier 6 Membership in the NYS and Local Retirement System and the NYS Teachers' Retirement System will be in effect as of April 1, 2012. Employees who are not registered with a retirement system, but are eligible to do so through their employment will have until midnight March 31, 2012, to fulfill the requirements to lock into Tier 5.

MEADOW HILL HOSTS ANNUAL FOREIGN LANGUAGE NIGHT
The Newburgh Enlarged City School District's Meadow Hill Global Explorations Magnet School held its annual Foreign Language Night on Thursday, February 23, 2012. Recently, eighty-two students from the Law and Forensics House at Heritage Middle School completed a water study analysis, led by Conservation Education Coordinator Ed Helbig, as part of the Orange County Water Authority's Groundwater Education Through Water Evaluation and Testing (GET WET!) In December, Horizons on the Hudson Magnet School held a community book fair at Barnes and Noble in Newburgh for students, parents and community members. A percentage of the proceeds from purchases made at the store during the day were donated back to the school for upcoming school initiatives.

Letters to Daddy: The Musical Key to Bully-Free graced the stage at Newburgh Free Academy recently for nearly 2,000 fifth and sixth grade students in the Newburgh Enlarged City School District.




NECSD HOLDS 5TH GRADE MATH MEET
The District held the final of three 5th grade math meets for the 2011-2012 school year on Weds., November 30, 2011. The meets are designed to provide cooperative learning experiences for the students that fosters not only an interest in mathematics, but also the ability to work with a team for a friendly competition.



HORIZONS-ON-THE-HUDSON HOSTS BREAKFAST WITH THE PRINCIPAL
Recently, in recognition of Parent Involvement Month, Horizons-on-the-Hudson Magnet School hosted the annual Breakfast with the Principal event. During the breakfast, Horizons Principal Lisa Buon gave a presentation to the nearly 200 families in attendance regarding the new Common Core Standards.

SCHOOLS RECEIVE FUEL UP TO PLAY 60 GRANTS
Recently, the District’s Fostertown ETC Magnet School and South Middle School were each the recipient of a $2,000 Fuel Up to Play 60 grant. This year Meadow Hill School has also been the recipient of two Fueld Up to Play grants. Fuel Up to Play 60 is a national initiative aimed to fight childhood obesity by teaching kids the value in taking control of their own health.
