NFA NORTH HOSTS SECOND ANNUAL SCIENCE RESEARCH SYMPOSIUM
The Second Annual Science Research Symposium was held on Monday, May 12, 2014, at the Newburgh Free Academy North Campus. The event featured student presentations, as well as keynote speaker Dr. William Schuster, Executive Director of Black Rock Forrest Consortium in Cornwall.

END OF THE YEAR SCHEDULE CHANGES FOR K-5 STUDENTS
The BOE recently approved changing the end of the year school schedule to change some days to half days for students in grades K-5. The following days are now half days: Monday, June 16th, Wednesday, June 18th, Tuesday, June 24th, and Wednesday, June 25th.

BALMVILLE STUDENTS LEARN ABOUT HUDSON RIVER’S WATER SYSTEM
Balmville teachers recently collaborated with Sarah Archbald, Conservation Educator from the Orange County Department of Water, and Chris Bowser, Fisheries Biologist from the NYS Department of Conservation, for an educational and interactive lesson about the Hudson River’s water system.

NFA HOLDS SECOND ANNUAL PROM DRESS DRIVE
On April 30, 2014, NFA held a gently-loved prom dress sale in the school’s bookstore. Dresses were marked for $10 each and the proceeds from all sales go to the Class of 2015 to help offset prom costs next year. NFA HOLDS LOCKDOWN DRILL AS PART OF ANNUAL TRAINING INITIATIVE

HERITAGE STUDENTS EARN HONORS AT SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING FAIR
Recently, students from Heritage MS attended the Greater Capital Region Science and Engineering Fair at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) in Troy, New York. The major goal of science fairs is to motivate and stimulate students, who have a special interest and talent in science, to pursue science related careers.

Recently, Brian Grodin’s sixth grade students at Heritage Middle School learned about Martin Luther King Jr.’s non-violent philosophy. The students were given a handout that asked them how they deal with conflict in their lives. The students were also given a handout about Martin Luther King Jr.’s six principles of non-violence.

BALMVILLE GARDEN PROJECT GROWS BRIGHT FUTURE FOR STUDENTS
The seed for a school garden project at Balmville Communications and Media Center lay dormant for close to ten years until 2012 when then PTA President Heather Christy-Robinson and teachers helped make it grow into the school’s first “green classroom.”

Recently, NFA Photography Club students worked on a community service project to help local animals. The exhibit featured photographs of cats and dogs available for adoption at the Town of Newburgh Animal Shelter. The prints were available for purchase, mounted and ready for framing.

EMPTY BOWLS TONIGHT - 5:30PM - 7PM - NFA MAIN CAMPUS NORTH CAFETERIA
On Thursday, April 3, 2014, Newburgh Free Academy will host Empty Bowls 2014. Empty Bowls is a national network of volunteer efforts to provide hunger relief. All proceeds go to the Food Bank of the Hudson Valley, the main food supplier to local food pantries and soup kitchens.

TEMPLE HILL ACADEMY STUDENTS CELEBRATE CARNEVALE
Students from Mrs. Byrne's 7th Grade Italian class at Temple Hill Academy completed a mini-unit about the celebration of Carnevale. The students created their own masks along with a poem inspired by their mask. The poems are in a Diamante style in both English and Italian.

NFA BOYS VARSITY BASKETBALL ARE SECTION 9 CHAMPIONS
On Sat., March 1, 2014, the NFA Boys Varsity Basketball team captured the Section 9 Class AA Basketball Championship against rival Kingston High School with a score of 72- 60. This championship put a signature on a very successful season for these young men who finished the season with an overall record of (20-2).

AUTHOR JOSEPH BRUCHAC VISITS FOSTERTOWN SCHOOL
Author Joseph Bruchac and his son Jesse visited Fostertown School. They are best known for their work as Native writers and storytellers. They have written over 120 books, many relating to the Indigenous people of the Americas with a particular focus on Native American and Anglo American lives and folklore.

EMPTY BOWLS EVENT RETURNS ON APRIL 3RD (5:30PM - 7:00PM)
It’s that time of year again for our annual tradition at NFA to help the many hungry people in our area. Empty Bowls is a national network of volunteer efforts to provide hunger relief. All proceeds go to the Hudson Valley Food Bank, the main food supplier to local food pantries and soup kitchens. The event will be taking place at NFA in the North Cafeteria.

COACHES VS. CANCER AT NEWBURGH FREE ACADEMY
The Newburgh Free Academy Girls’ Varsity Basketball Team raised $1,017 for Coaches vs. Cancer during Friday’s home game against Monroe-Woodbury. Last year, the NFA girls raised $202, so they had a five-fold increase in donations this year. NFA honored Michelle McKnight and Mary Ann Prokosch at the event.

NFA HOSTS ITALIAN EXCHANGE STUDENTS DURING ANNUAL VISIT TO THE HUDSON VALLEY
Recently, 29 students from Italy visited Newburgh Free Academy as part of an exchange program between NFA and Liceo Scientifico e Linguistico, located in the Italian town of Ruvo di Puglia. CITY OF NEWBURGH FIRE DEPARTMENT VISITS PRE-K STUDENTS AT HOH
Pre-K students at Horizons on the Hudson recently had a visit from the City of Newburgh Fire Department to teach the children about fire safety. Lieutenant Terry Ahers talked about smoke detectors and changing the batteries, showed the students how a firefighter looks and sounds with gear on, and students toured the inside of a fire truck.

GOLDBACK TENNIS CLUB HOSTS TENNIS FEST
On Saturday, October 12th, the Goldback Tennis Club hosted the first ever JV Tennis Fest for girls in the OCIAA. This two hour "Tennis Fest" brought girls from five different districts together to celebrate their end of the season. The girls went through some drills with help from by tennis pros, Mark Savage and Jason Stokes.

New Windsor School Receives $5,000 Lowe’s Grant
Recently, New Windsor School received a $5,000 Lowe's Toolbox for Education grant for a new playground that was installed prior to the end of the school year. The grant application was based on the goal of adding new playground equipment that is both safe and fun for the children at New Windsor School.

On Wednesday, June 5, 2013, Newburgh Free Academy seniors celebrated the culmination of their internship held at Elant in Fishkill as part of the Newburgh Enlarged City School District’s Nurse Aide Training Program. The 2013 class is the largest since the program’s inception with fifty students earning their pins this year.

NFA PROM RAISES MONEY FOR HURRICANE SANDY RELIEF EFFORTS
NFA seniors decided to do more with less this year and give back to those in need. SOUTH MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENTS BRING THE CLASSROOM OUTDOORS
Students in Shari Franco’s sixth grade class at South Middle School participated in a special program this year called The Walking Classroom. MEADOW HILL BILINGUAL CLASSES CELEBRATE CINCO DE MAYO
On Friday, May 3, 2013, six Meadow Hill Global Explorations bilingual classes in kindergarten through fifth grade celebrated Cinco de Mayo. Meadow Hill School Physical Education teachers Scott Seabury, Kristen Gunsch, Danielle Desarro and Elissa Kenney, along with School Nurse Teacher Denise Ribble, received bags of fitness and sports equipment. Ribble helped the teachers obtain the equipment using funding from the school’s Fuel Up To Play 60 grant.

NECSD ENERGY INITIATIVE RECOGNIZED FOR EXCEPTIONAL ENERGY CONSERVATION
At the District's BOE meeting held on November 27, 2012, Energy Conservation Administrator Roger Ramjug provided an update of the Energy Education program’s success. His presentation provided results that since July of 2009, the NECSD has reduced their energy consumption by twenty-two percent.

NFA BLOOD DRIVE - THURSDAY DECEMBER 13TH
Newburgh Free Academy will be holding a blood drive on Thursday, December 13, 2012 from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. in the Girls’ Gym. Due to Hurricane Sandy, the region’s blood supply is very low and it is critical that the supply be replenished. Each donation saves three lives. Donors should eat a healthy breakfast prior to donating.

AFLAC’S NEW FLEX FORMS FOR 2012-2013 SCHOOL YEAR
The new Flex Plan year begins on October 1st, 2012. The District’s new Flex Plan carrier will be Aflac. Those who were participants in the Flex Plan under the Preferred Group will still have until December 31, 2012 to submit Flex claims incurred prior to September 30, 2012, directly to the Preferred Group.

Larkin Jr. visited the NFA Main Campus to honor NFA English Teacher Christine McCartney, recipient of the distinguished Fulbright Awards in Teaching grant. Third grade classes from Vails Gate High Tech Magnet School went to Mohonk Preserve in New Paltz, New York recently thanks to a combination of grants. NFA'S EMPTY BOWLS RAISES MONEY FOR THE FOOD BANK OF THE HUDSON VALLEY

SCHOOLS RECEIVE FUEL UP TO PLAY 60 GRANTS
Recently, the District’s Fostertown ETC Magnet School and South Middle School were each the recipient of a $2,000 Fuel Up to Play 60 grant. This year Meadow Hill School has also been the recipient of two Fueld Up to Play grants. Fuel Up to Play 60 is a national initiative aimed to fight childhood obesity by teaching kids the value in taking control of their own health.

NECSD’S ANNUAL 5TH GRADE MATH TOURNAMENT UNDERWAY
Beginning on Wed., Sept. 21, 2011, Newburgh Enlarged City School District 5th grade students completed the first phase of the annual 5th Grade Math Meet in the Board of Education auditorium. The second and third meets will be held on Weds., October 26 and Weds., November 16.

NFA UPDATES - MERCY COLLEGE, EARLY DISMISSAL, COLLEGE WORKSHOP

NECSD HOLDS ANNUAL SUMMER CONSTRUCTION BUS TOUR
District officials, along with members of various NECSD committees, came together on Thurs., September 1, 2011 for the Annual Summer Constriction Bus Tour. The tour, led by Terry Damon of Armlin, Damon & McMordie, the company hired to manage the improvement plan, visited schools within the NECSD that received renovations.

“SCHOOL IS COOL 2012” PROVIDES SCHOOL SUPPLIES TO OVER 1,000 NECSD STUDENTS
Recently, the District, in conjunction with community partners, held the annual School Is Cool 2012 backpack and school supplies distribution event. In an effort to assist students within the NECSD as they headed back to school this year, the program provided families with backpacks and school supplies.

Campaign Designed to Raise Awareness about Ovarian Cancer. NECSD Physical Education Teacher, Girls’ Soccer Coach and Assistant Lacrosse Coach Elissa Kenney, along with the help of her NECSD colleagues, is partnering with a nation-wide campaign, “Turn the Towns Teal”, to promote ovarian cancer awareness.
