NFA West Campus Students Learn about the Empire State After-School Program

Students at Newburgh Free Academy, West Campus had a brief assembly about the Empire State After-School Program this morning. Mr. Grice, Empire State After-School Program Facilitator let students know about the programs that would be held at West and encouraged everyone to sign up.

“Every middle school and high school campus in our district has classes through the Empire State After-School Program. Many schools have the same programs throughout the district, but some schools do have unique programs for their building. The programs run until May 29th, so even if you have something afterschool right now, like Regents review, or an after-school activity, think about how long that commitment is, because you still may be able to sign up for this program too. There are enough programs for every single student to enroll in an after-school program.” Mr. Grice, Empire State After-School Program Facilitator

Mr. Lamar, Ms. Kylie, and Ms. Jill each discussed programs that will be offered, along with Mr. Rick Feltington, Facilitator of Dreams to Action through BurnBright International, who is offering a program that will be unique to the NFA West Campus.

Mr. Lamar and Ms. Kylie will be teaching computer science with an emphasis on website and app development. “By a show of hands, who here thinks that computer science is for super smart people who are really good at math and science? Well, you’re right, but you’re also those really smart people, whether you realize it or not. For these courses, the math that you need to know is how to count and the science skill you need is to think – that’s it. Everyone has to start somewhere!” Ms. Kylie D’Alfonso

Ms. Jill will be teaching computer science with an emphasis on coding for apps and app development. Ms. Jill reminded students that they use their cell phones, Fitbits, or other technology that incorporates apps to encourage students to get involved to learn more about what they’re using.

Mr. Lamar compared learning to code to learning a new language. “Learning this type of skill is redeveloping your brain, the same way as if you were learning a new language. These courses will also look really impressive on your resumes.”

Mr. Rick Feltington, Facilitator of Dreams to Action through BurnBright International, who is offering a program that will be unique to the NFA West Campus described his program as something that will “help you tune in to what you want to be. Declare your dream to the world and receive support to make those dreams come true.” The program will include self-awareness and self-expression, incorporating art, music, dance, and poetry.
