A Letter from Dr. Padilla Regarding Internet Safety/Una carta del Dr. Padilla sobre la seguridad en Internet

March 1, 2019

Dear Goldback parents and families,

The safety and well-being of your child(ren) is our highest priority. I am writing this letter to inform you about a topic circulating the internet recently. The “Momo Challenge” is the most recent example of the importance of speaking with your children about digital citizenship and personal safety while using the internet.

As a parent, it is important to set up boundaries and guidelines surrounding use of the internet for your child(ren). It is important that children know the importance of not interacting with strangers on the internet, the same way they likely know to avoid talking to strangers in person. Developing and setting privacy systems on devices and in individual apps or programs is helpful toward preventing dangerous situations for your child(ren) and your family. In video games, you can also set-up restrictions on contacts or friends and limitations with regard to accessing user generated content that may include add ons that are not directly affiliated with an individual game. It is equally as important to talk with your child(ren) to help them develop skills and awareness when navigating the internet. The internet can be a powerful tool for exploration and learning, however, it can also be a dangerous place for those who have not learned how to safely use the platform.

Requiring that use of video games and YouTube watching is only allowed in shared spaces of your home fosters an atmosphere of openness and transparency about online activity for your child(ren). If you notice your child(ren) switching screens or closing their devices when you enter a room, it is worth having a conversation about their online activity. Additionally, vigilance of new email addresses or unfamiliar phone numbers associated with your devices should signal a time to check in with your child(ren) about internet safety.

All district issued devices, including devices that are taken home from the district, are filtered using CIPA compliant filtering devices to assist in keeping our children safe on the internet. Included in this filtering is an ability to force our students to use tools such as Google Safe Search and YouTube for Education to help filter videos with only educational content as determined by YouTube and Google. We utilize multiple pieces of software and hardware on our network to provide additional filtering and security to assist in keeping bad sites, malware and viruses off of district owned device to protect both the students and data contained on our devices.

Our Instructional Technology Facilitators (ITFs) are teachers who focus on the use of technology, which includes lessons regarding digital citizenship and safe practices while using the internet. If you have any questions or concerns about how your child(ren) use the internet, please contact the ITF for your child(ren)’s school. Helpful resources can also be found on our district website at newburghschools.org/cybersafety.

Together, we will promote a safer and more secure environment for our scholars, faculty, staff, and NECSD community.

Through the work of all,

Estimados padres y familias Goldback:

Roberto Padilla, Ed.D.
