NECSD’s 10th Annual Junior High School Art Show on Display at Newburgh Free Library
The Newburgh Enlarged City School District’s Fine and Performing Arts Department held the opening reception for the 10th Annual Junior High School Art Show on Wed., May 13, 2009 in the Newburgh Free Library lobby. Artwork from South Junior High School, North Junior High School, Heritage Junior High School, and Heritage at Stewart Campus student artists will be on display until the end of May. In addition to the artwork on display by the students, a musical performance was given by the talented Heritage Select Chorus under the direction of Herb Lamb.
Of the artwork on display, NECSD’s Director of Fine & Performing Arts Theresa Brown explained, “The variety and quality of junior high artwork is a tribute to the excellent foundation established within the elementary school art programs, as well as the continued instruction provided at the junior high art level. It is obvious that each educator offers their students a unique learning environment allowing them to express their creative thoughts and ideas.”
Each year, students learn different techniques in their art classes. The 7th Grade Discovery curriculum focuses on creative problem solving. The students explore materials and ideas that stretch the imagination while helping to turn words and ideas into visual images. The 8th Grade Principles in American curriculum explores American artists, concentrating on 20th century art movements and the art of Native Americans. The 9th Grade Studio in Art curriculum is the foundation course for a three to five year art sequence at the high school. It also meets the one credit arts requirement for graduation.
