The legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was celebrated on Wednesday, January 20, 2010, at Celebrating the Dream 2010, the 17th Annual Community-Wide Celebration of Dr. King’s Dream, held in the North Junior High School Auditorium. The evening focused on Dr. King’s dream though song, pageantry, and drama with community leaders as well as youth from the Newburgh Enlarged City School District. In addition, this year’s Keynote Speaker, New York State Senator William Larkin Jr., reflected on his time serving in the Army after being selected to escort Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in the march from Selma to Montgomery, Alabama.
This year’s ceremony began with students from Meadow Hill Global Explorations Magnet School displaying the Flags of the World as they marched down the aisles lead by the audience singing, “Let There Be Peace on Earth.”
City of Newburgh Mayor Nicholas Valentine and Superintendent of the Newburgh Enlarged City School District Dr. Annette M. Saturnelli welcomed the audience packed with people of all ages, races, and backgrounds for the annual event. In addition, members of the NECSD Board of Education, City Council members, religious leaders and other community dignitaries were in attendance.
Dr. Saturnelli urged audience members to see the significance of Dr. King’s dream as well as understand how his dream was reflected in each of us today.

Later in the evening, Ebenezer Baptist Church’s God’s Heavenly Angels Inspirational Dance Group performed the inspirational dance “Holy, Holy, Holy” for audience members. According to the group’s director, Glenda Faison Crawford, the young performers in the group represent a blend of schools in the NECSD. In addition, a poignant performance of “There Will Be Peace” by the Gidney Avenue Magnet School Chorus led by Karin McCartney brought a smile to the faces of the young and old in attendance at the event.
