Vails Gate School Students Explore the Mohonk Preserve Thanks to Community Grants

Third grade classes from Vails Gate High Tech Magnet School went to Mohonk Preserve in New Paltz, New York recently thanks to a combination of grants. Teacher Janet De Stefano wrote and was awarded a $700 Target Educational Grant as well as a $650 grant she received from Teaching the Hudson Valley.

“The third grade classes wish to thank both organizations. Without their support, this educational trip would not have been possible,” explained De Stefano.

The classes of Lizette Colon-Peña, Megan Connolly, Janet De Stefano, Judy Hart, and Dardanella Russell-Scott, enjoyed a stream study where they examined the many insects and amphibians living in the water environment. Students used nets to discover the aquatic life residing beneath the surface of the Coxing Kill stream.

Next, the students enjoyed a nature walk through the woods where they discovered how to use their senses to explore the forest environment. After completing this very exciting day, the students wrote about their experiences. De Stefano explained that the school hopes to continue participating in this very valuable educational venue next year with the help of the generous community support.
