Balmville Students Travel the Globe During Famous Landmarks Lesson

Second grade students in Kristina Collier’s class at the Balmville Communications and Media Center recently completed a social studies lesson focusing on the history of famous landmarks. During the lesson, students expressed an immense interest in learning more about the attractions, which gave Collier the idea to propose an extra credit project for her class. In order to earn extra credit, students were offered the opportunity to either create a 3-D model or 2-D poster board presentation with facts, a written report or a poem/song about a landmark of choice.

After presenting her extra credit ideas to the students, nearly the entire class opted to participate in the extra credit project. After the projects were completed, each student rotated as the "social studies teacher" and gave a presentation to fellow classmates about the landmark they selected.

“The students took notes, asked questions and afterwards the students were quizzed on the information. Every student passed with flying colors,” explained Collier.
