Local Veterans Visit Gardnertown School for Historical Presentation
Third, fourth, and fifth grade student-leaders from Gardnertown Fundamental Magnet School met vet-erans of the country’s military on Wednesday, December 7, 2016. “You are the most powerful force in the world today,” 1st Vice Commander Jim Scali told the students in attendance.
The veterans shared a brief video with students and gave a history lesson about Betsy Ross, how to properly fold a flag, why the right hand is used when saying the pledge of allegiance and saluting, and the re-veille military wake up call.
“The partnership between our schools and the community is an important aspect of our students’ educa-tion. The firsthand accounts and information from our veterans brings history to life for our young scholars. It’s a privilege and honor to have our veterans share their time with us today. The presentation is aligned to New York State's Social Studies Framework,” shared Dr. Augustine E. Tornatore, Newburgh Enlarged City School District’s Director of Social Studies K-12.
