Reading Garden Grows at South Middle School Thanks to Lowe’s Grant

South Middle School students, faculty, staff, alumni and volunteers from Lowe’s in Newburgh collaborated on a recent Saturday afternoon to clean and transform the school’s courtyard into the new South Middle School Reading Garden.

Through a $1,200 grant from Lowe’s, volunteers turned the school’s courtyard into an inviting area to read. Volunteers helped install walkways, plant flowers, trim bushes and remove branches from trees. In addition, a grassy area under shady trees is available where students can stretch out with a good book and begin a lifelong habit of reading. In addition, a vegetable garden was revitalized and will be used for classroom lessons. Once the Reading Garden was complete, the school held a commemorative ribbon cutting and invited families to be in attendance.

“At Lowe’s, we take great pride in improving the communities we serve. This project gives students a place to learn, relax and just enjoy being outside. We are proud to be a part of the Newburgh community, and also appreciate the students, their families and faculty from South Middle School that worked side-by-side with Lowe’s Heroes employees to make a difference,” said Michaella Csizmar, Human Resource Manager of Lowe’s in Newburgh.
