NECSD Students and Parents Learn Science and Math Tips During Educational Family Night
On Thursday, October 20, 2011, Newburgh Enlarged City School District Universal Pre-K and Kindergarten students, along with their families, were invited to attend Math and Science Made Easy, an event featuring interactive activities focused on math and science to encourage a healthy and fun curiosity in children, held at Horizons on the Hudson Magnet School. Dr. Jessica Mikhaylov and Dr. Csilla Szabo, faculty for the United States Military Academy at West Point Math and Science Department, developed the family activities and recruited and trained cadets to help guide families through the activities at math and science stations.
Parents explored ways to support math and science learning in the home through everyday activities and were taught techniques to help students learn and appreciate math and science.
According to Newburgh Enlarged City School District Coordinator of Universal Pre-K and Parent and Community Involvement Pamela Peterson, “Math and science are a part of our everyday life, which is why it is important to teach children about the ways that we use them in the home, like when we are cooking from a recipe, or when shopping or planning a trip. We hope the simple and fun activities the families engaged in will help support math and science learning in the home.”
