NECSD Students Unite for Peace

Temple Hill Academy and Horizons on the Hudson Commemorate International Peace Day

On September 21, 2011, students from the Newburgh Enlarged City School District celebrated International Peace Day by uniting with others to spread the message of peace across the world.

Temple Hill Academy Art Teachers, Elizabeth Cappello, Liza Mills, and Ann Marie Morales-Ear, along with their students, participated in the international art movement Chalk4Peace. The event invites people of all ages and backgrounds to unite and communicate their vision of peace by creating chalk artwork outdoors. The front walkway of Temple Hill Academy was lively with the sounds of students, art teachers, and building administration throughout the day, as students gathered in small groups and worked together to create a giant chalk montage displaying hope, peace, and love for a better world for all.

In addition, over at Horizons on the Hudson Magnet School, students and teachers stood united for peace by forming a human peace sign on the school playground. As the first Orange County elementary school to be recognized as an accredited International Baccalaureate Programme school, IB Primary Years Programme (PYP) Coordinator David Brown explained that teaching the concept of tolerance and peace for others was especially important to show students.
