Fostertown ETC Magnet School Hosts Family Health and Wellness Night
On Thursday, December 8, 2011, Fostertown ETC Magnet School held a Family Health & Wellness Night at to support the building’s grant-funded Fuel Up to Play 60 program. Jim Germanakos, a contestant from NBC’s The Biggest Loser, was a special guest for the evening and spoke to parents and students about his experience on the show during his fitness journey, answered questions from the audience, and signed autographs for students.
In addition, families were given the opportunity to gather information about health and wellness during a special health exhibit by local business including: Fit Body Boot Camp, Gold’s Gym, Healthy Orange, Hudson Valley Swim, Kennett’s Gymnastics, Mid-Hudson School of Yoga, Nature’s Pantry, SportsPlex, St. Luke’s Cornwall Physical Therapy, Synergistic Wellness Center of New Paltz, and Zumba with Maritza Carabello. In addition, interactive exhibits included a free blood pressure screenings and the opportunity to speak with a dietician from St. Luke’s Cornwall Hospital.
“The students, faculty, and staff were thrilled to have the chance to meet a contestant from The Biggest Loser! Jim Germanakos did a great job describing his experience on the show and provided the children with valuable knowledge about health and wellness,” explained Fostertown ETC Magnet School Fuel Up To Play 60 Coordinator Danielle Nelson. “In addition, families were able to gather information from local businesses and won wonderful health-related prizes! We look forward to our food tastings in January and to the start of our Healthy Snacking program, as well as the continuation of our Walk Across America Challenge.”
Additional businesses that donated to the event were Army Hockey, Planet Fitness, Shadows on the Hudson, and Union Avenue Community Fitness Center in New Windsor.
