The 2011-2012 school year will be filled with many transitions as we begin preparing to fully implement the Common Core Standards for ELA/Literacy and Mathematics in September of 2012. Some of these transitions will include:
- Learning about the Common Core Standards for Mathematics and how to embed and include them in planning lessons and instruction
- Revising and aligning our district curriculum maps to the Common Core Learning Standards for Mathematics
- Emphasizing and encouraging more student engagement by including a variety of opportunities for students to work in small groups and utilizing more hands-on, applications and project-based learning and instruction
- Emphasizing small group instruction by incorporating diverse strategies for differentiating instruction
- Designing mathematics curriculum modules which relate and align to the common core standards
- Increasing the focus and richness of classroom instruction
- Incorporating and imbedding the eight standards of mathematical practice in lesson planning and instruction
- Beginning to focus on the common core key math fluencies for each grade level
All of these efforts and initiatives will help us to better prepare our students to be successful in their study of mathematics.
