Welcome to the English Language Arts Webpage. Please explore the links and documents to learn more about literacy in the Newburgh Enlarged City School District. Your feedback and suggestions about what is here and what you would like to have available here is always welcome. This page is intended to be useful to students, teachers and parents.
The 2011-2012 school year will be one of transitions.
- Learning about the new common core standards and how to infuse them in lesson planning and instruction
- Aligning our curriculum maps to the common core standards
- Implementing new assessments for each grade level to make sure teachers know students’ instructional and independent reading levels
- Emphasizing small group instruction with differentiation
- Crafting ELA modules which relate to the common core standards
- Learning about and strategizing with close reading for vocabulary, questioning and writing about the text
- Writing for the common core standards which will include more persuasive and research writing.
- Reading for the common core standards which will include more nonfiction text, more short text and multiple readings of text.
- Emphasizing student engagement and more student inquiry
- Drafting a Literacy Framework for the district K-8 which will better define how we look at, talk about and teach literacy
All of this focus of course is with the intended purpose of increasing and improving student learning and achievement. We have a sense of urgency in our schools and in the District, an urgency to do better for our students in the 21st century.
